History of Anjani Eye Hospital

In central India, The name “Mokadam” is synonymous with Allopathy since 1905. The first doctor in Mokadam family, Late Dr Ganpatrao Mokadam, got his LMP from Medical school at Patna in 1905. He had topped in Anatomy and surgery. He was in Government service and worked at Hoshangabad, Balapur, Saoner, Buldhana, Murtizapur and Akola.

His son, Late Dr. Diwakar Mokadam, got his MBBS from KEM Hospital, Bombay in 1925. He joined state government service and worked at Jabalpur, Yawatmal and Gondia. Later Diwakar got his M.S. (Surgery) and started the first surgical nursing home at Vali Building at Sitabuldi, Nagpur in 1952. He was a leading surgeon of the region till his untimely death at the age of 48yrs, in 1960.

Dr. Diwakar’s younger sister, Late Dr. Anjani Mokadam, got her MBBS and later M.D. (Gynae-Obs) in 1944 from KEM, Bombay. She practiced at Mokadam Hospital, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur till her death in 1972. Dr. Anjani was also Superintendant of Daga Memorial Hospital, Nagpur and was a very renowned and popular gynaecologist.

Anjani Eye Hospital was established in 1976 at its present address in Ramdespeth Nagpur by Dr. Prafull Mokadam, son of Late Jageshwar (eldest son of Dr. Ganpatrao Mokadam), in the memory of his aunt Late Dr. Anjani Mokadam. The formal inauguration of the hospital took place on 9th Jan 1977 at the hands of Late Mrs. Prabha Rao, who was then Minister of Co-operation, education and later Governor or Rajasthan.

Dr. Prafull Mokadam

MBBS, MS, DO

Dr. Prafull J. Mokadam is the Founder & Chief Medical Director of Anjani Eye Hospital and the senior most consultant ophthalmologist. He worked as a Teacher in Ophthalmology at GMC Nagpur for five years and worked as an Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at Indira Gandhi Medical College Nagpur from 1979 to 2003. He has conducted thousands of free cataract surgeries in various eye camps and has given benefit of his surgical skill as a Rotary volunteer to patients in Jamaica, Indonesia and Uganda. He is often invited as faculty not only at national level like All India Ophthalmic conferences and also to various state ophthalmic conferences like Tamilnadu, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. etc. He was conferred upon the Life Time Achievement award by the Maharashtra Ophthalmic Society in 2012 and by the Bombay Ophthalmic Association in 2019. The Rotary International has awarded him with the prestigious “Service Above Self” Award in 2003 for his exemplary work in his field.

Dr. Shaunak Prafull Mokadam

MBBS, MRCOphth (London), DOMS

Dr. Shaunak P. Mokadam is the Chief Managing Director and Phaco Surgeon and Pediatric Ophthalmologist. He completed his MBBS from Pravaranagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Loni and then went on to pursue his post graduate degree course in ophthalmology from the prestigious Aravind Eye Hospital in Tamil Nadu. He was awarded for the MRCOphth (London) [Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London)], in 2004. He completed his Diploma in Ophthalmology at N K P Salve Institute of Medical Sciences, Hingna, Nagpur in 2005. He then did a fellowship in Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus with Prof Ahud Asia, at Tel Aviv, Israel in 2005. He has presented papers in several international and national conferences and is an invited faculty in local and state ophthalmology conferences. Presently, he manages all patients with squint, pediatric cataracts, refractive errors, cataract surgeries and manages glaucoma (both medically and surgically) at Anjani Eye Hospital, Nagpur.

Dr. Shamik Prafull Mokadam

Dr. Shamik P. Mokadam is the Chief Medical Officer and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon. He completed his MBBS from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi (M), Wardha and then went on to pursue his post graduate degree course in ophthalmology from the prestigious Aravind Eye Hospital in Tamil Nadu. He was awarded the Diplomate of National Board in Ophthalmology in 2006 and was awarded for the MRCOphth (London) [Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London)], in 2006. He then did a fellowship in Vitreo-retinal surgery at Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore and joined as a consultant vitreo-retinal surgeon at Anjani Eye Hospital, Nagpur in 2007. Later, in 2016, he completed a an additional one year fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Lions Eye Institute, Perth, Australia with Prof Ian Constable. He has presented papers in several international and national conferences and is an invited faculty in local and state ophthalmology forums. Presently, he manages all patients with diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, retinal vasular occlusions, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes and other retinal conditions (both surgically and medically).

Dr. Shweta Shamik Mokadam

MBBS, DNB (Ophth), FLVPEI

Dr. Shweta S. Mokadam completed her MBBS from Government Medical College, Nagpur and went on to pursue her Diplomate of National Board in ophthalmology (DNB) degree course from the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya (Medical Research Foundation), Chennai in the year 2006. She then did a fellowship in Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Cataract from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad and joined as a visiting consultant at Anjani Eye Hospital in 2008. She was awarded the G Venkataswamy gold medal in Ophthalmology for topping the DNB examinations in India. She also received the best outgoing postgraduate medal from Sankara Nethralaya. She has presented papers in several international and national conferences and is an invited faculty in various state, regional and local ophthalmology forums. Her special interests are refractive surgery, keratoplasty and cataract.

Dr. Richa Dharap Wagh

Dr. Richa Dharap Wagh completed her MBBS from Topiwala National Medical College and B.Y.L Nair Charitable Hospital, Mumbai and went on to pursue her Diplomate of National Board in ophthalmology (DNB) degree course from H.V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune in 2017. She then did a fellowship in Orbit and Oculoplasty Surgery from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. She has presented papers in several international and national conferences and is an invited faculty in various state, regional and local ophthalmology forums. She is a visiting consultant at Anjani Eye Hospital with special interests in Orbit and Oculoplasty surgeries including Orbital trauma, Orbital tumors, lid reconstructions, ptosis surgeries etc.
